Microelectrochemical Measurements at Expanding Droplets (MEMED): Direct Investigation of Reactive Fluxes at Liquid/Liquid Interfaces

The basic experimental setup and theory of microelectrochemical measurements at expanding droplets (MEMED) is described. A key strength of MEMED is that it can be used to sensitively probe reactive fluxes of spontaneous reactions at liquid/liquid interfaces, by directly measuring the concentration profiles of both reactant and product. This capability of MEMED is demonstrated via a model system in which coupled ion transfer processes are shown to occur during the reduction of 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane in nitrobenzene by aqueous Fe(CN)6.
